The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time” (Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary during WW1)
De La Salle school drama society invite you to commemorate, mourn and reflect upon the last 100 years of the fallen on this the centenary of the end of WWI (1918-2018) through its presentation of Simon Read’s adaptation of Micheal Morpurgo’s “Private Peaceful”
This passionate, beguiling and moving award-winning story is an unflinching examination of the horrors of war and the injustice surrounding the execution of soldiers by firing squad, on the – often false – grounds of desertion or cowardice.
In 2006 All 306 British First World War soldiers executed for desertion or cowardice were pardoned. Many of them were the same age as the young people you see today.
This performance honours all those who have suffered shame, stigma and hardship as a result of following their own moral compass. We dedicate this, our performance of “Private Peaceful” to you and all those who have fallen. Lest we forget.
